As I stated in my first “Page” (gosh I wish WordPress had an index, or something to make it easier to understand their jargon), my method of madness is quite peculiar.
Since my stories are mostly stream-of-conscious (with rare exceptions requiring a tad bit of research for specific dates and terminology), I strive to make the process as simple as possible. I have a document with a long list of names – “normal”, “foreign”, sci-fi, fantasy, ancient, futuristic, old, timeless, masc, femme, neutral, and more – without a story in mind I gloss over the names until one speaks out with a voice, and I write their name with that voice and the story unfolds, maybe including other names and I allow the characters to lead me with their history and motivation and reaction to the reality in which they exist. Sometimes I don’t have a strong sense of character, they’re somewhat predictable and suddenly thrown into a somewhat unpredictable situation, I still have a vast knowledge of who they are and where they come from, it’s just not very vivid… but frequently I have such a strong vision of a character that I could write several paragraphs about not only who they are and where they come from, but how they got there, where they’re going, what made them that way. If anyone has any questions, I am more than happy to answer.
If my stories were a book, the chapters would be divided by the shows I’ve chosen for story titles.
