Summer, Week One: Reese didn’t leave his bed. Even for meals, he would reach out to the plate left by his mother and withdraw the food beneath his covers. After his struggle to complete the semester, his parents had low standards for “progress”.
Summer, Week Three: Reese noticed a nest of blackbirds next to his windowsill which elicited his first smile. One chick in particular caught his attention, smaller than the others, with frayed feathers and a cracked voice. Reese lifted his window to talk to the birds through the screen, asking about their dreams, discussing his own; his parents began raising their standards.
Summer, Week Five: The Runt was as big as its siblings, Reese wanted to believe their conversations had helped. For the past week he had been lifting the screen and dropping bird seed into the nest while they were away, an extra treat for his new friends.
Summer, Final Week: When Reese lifted the screen to sprinkle some more seed, he noticed a small charm on the sill. He had brushed off a bead the day before, thinking it was just unwanted scrap accidentally scooped up by the birds when collecting material for the nest, but the shiny silver pendant caused him to re-evaluate.
Every few days the birds left a small trinket for Reese; bits of chain, more charms, a few rings. He’d return excitedly from school, running up to his room to see what gift lay waiting for him. Eventually they flew South for the Winter, but a few weeks before Spring Break, the glimmer of a sapphire caught his eye and he knew his friends were back.
