Sunshine Days

After what felt like hours, Simon and the other boys returned to class and everyone sat in their seats until Mrs. Fletcher said they could open their boxes; Valentine’s cards tumbled onto desks, except for Simon’s, but he still had hope. At recess he walked over to Lydia and asked for her answer; she stepped her forearm crutches toward him and leaned in to give him a kiss on the cheek as she thanked him. “So is that a yes?” Simon asked, Lydia smiled warmly as she said “No.” Simon wondered if he would ever understand girls. He wouldn’t.
