The Gift

Jack returned home and explained to Mother that rather than trading their prize milkcow for food and money, which they needed desperately, he traded her to a mysterious stranger in exchange for a handful of “magic beans” which the man guaranteed would provide bounty beyond the measures of gold; Mother managed to not strike the boy throughout the speech not by patience, but because she was utterly stupefied. She came out of it, however, and clenched her hands in fists of rage when the lad held out a hand full of the “beans”, which were in fact baby monkey teeth.
